Babylon Bomonti

Since moving from its original Asmalımescit location, Istanbul’s prime live music venue Babylon has moved to Bomonti, Şişli. Babylon is known for its lively program of international and local acts, focusing on jazz, rock, world music, funk, electronica, and alternative pop music. Babylon is within the Bomontiada complex, housed in the old Bomonti Bira Fabrikası (Bomonti Beer Factory), which is a 15-minute walk from Osmanbey metro station.

The 500-person concert hall fosters a cool, intimate vibe, with the audience standing close to the stage. Old brick walls give the feel of an underground warehouse party, which suits the venue’s alternative acts. Meanwhile, high-quality lighting and sound systems guarantee the best audiovisual experience.

Babylon has a history of bringing together local and foreign acts on the same stage – Turkish clarinetist Hüsnü Şenlendirici with Brooklyn Funk Essentials, or Joe McPhee and Turkish free jazz band KonstruKt, for example. Jazz saxophonist David Murray has been a regular performer at Babylon, even recording an album in memory of Babylon founder Mehmet Uluğ. Babylon also regularly hosts DJ sets by hot names in the music industry, turning the concert venue into a club-type dance floor.

Depending on the act being hosted that night, the crowd at Babylon can range from students on a relaxed night out to bearded jazzheads or foreign rock connoisseurs. For those who are interested in discovering something different in the Turkish and world music scenes, the Babylon program is a good place to watch.

Sunset Grill & Bar

Located on a hilltop in the posh neighborhood of Ulus, Sunset Grill & Bar is awe-inspiring both with its food and its stunning views. This longstanding fine-dining venue offers international and Japanese cuisines at its finest in addition to a few select Turkish dishes.

The sushi bar and Chef Takemura’s specials are unquestionably outstanding and are the highlight of Sunset’s menu. Sunset also has one of the largest and most extensive International wine lists, with rare and expensive items alongside the more moderately-priced ones. Cigar selection is also available.

The brasserie concept, launched in 2015, introduces sophisticated Mediterranean flavors to the business lunch offer. Chef Fabrice Canelle’s menu, including daily specials for the whole week, features a variety of salads (quinoa, arugula) and fish (eel, salmon), as well as great choices of steak cuts, all served until 3pm. In the afternoon, the brasserie’s cozy setting turns into a futuristic bar.

Sunset is definitely one of the best that Istanbul has to offer with its delicious food, great service, and spectacular views of the Bosphorus, enjoyed from the garden. It is an excellent choice for a business lunch, a casual afternoon with friends, or an exquisite dinner.

All items from the restaurant are also available at the bar, while a special bar menu with such delicacies as duck spring rolls or grilled lamb satay are also present for sustenance.

Lucca

As you walk or drive through the posh district of Bebek’s main street, you will immediately notice Lucca’s crowd, spilling out onto the street. A lively lounge by night, Lucca is calmer and less crowded during the day when it operates as a restaurant, which makes it an ideal place for brunch, coffee, or drinks. Later in the day, the venue gets packed with its frequent clientele: well-known Turkish and international DJs spin for the upbeat crowd focusing on jazz, funk, and house.

The venue features high ceilings and a minimalist décor; its cuisine is Turkish-American fusion with a fair sprinkling of world cuisine, including pad thai, an extensive range of tapas, eclectic seafood dishes, and sushi and sashimi varieties, all under the operation of a Spanish head chef. The menu changes every few months to offer the best of the season. Brunch is offered every Sunday between 10am-3pm from September to June, while the summer months feature an extensive breakfast menu. Lucca is famously hip, and is a winner of several awards for best brasserie-café, and best bar since its opening.

In addition to its sensational cocktails, Lucca has an extensive wine list featuring about 60 wines, with 18 wines offered by the glass. Baylan Bebek

Baylan is one of Istanbul’s oldest patisseries, and its modern branch in Bebek includes a three-story restaurant, a patisserie, and a bar that is perfect for after-work drinks. The menu, which was designed with the consultation of the three Michelin starred French Chef Alain Ducasse, is not extensive, instead focusing on a select number of dishes. There is also a noteworthy wine list, with a nice selection of both Turkish and international wines.

Baylan’s interior is rich and tasteful with lots of dark wood, cream colored linens, and marble floors in a herringbone design, with a wonderful view over the Bosphorus. Particular attention has been paid to the table setting, with fine linen table cloths, Limoges china and silver flatware, as well as beautiful double walled glasses.

Baylan’s classics include Kup Griye (made with ice-cream, caramel sauce, and crocan), Trüf (dense chocolate cake), and Karamel (caramel and chocolate cake topped with profiteroles filled with caramel). In addition, Baylan’s menu includes a variety of desserts, such as mille-feuille, tiramisu, macaroons, and mousse au chocolat, as well as pastry products like quiche lorraine and croissant. You will also find a variety of coffee, tea, fruit juices, and alcoholic drinks.

A Little bit of History

Founded by the Albanian immigrant Filip Lenas in 1923, Baylan is one of the oldest and most established patisseries in Istanbul. Its first branch was opened in Beyoğlu in 1923 under the name Loryan, which was changed to Baylan in 1934. In 1961, a new branch in Kadıköy was opened—and this branch is still in operation to this day.  In 2010, a very modern branch opened up in Bebek and renovations began taking place in the Kadıköy branch to keep the glory of the old days.

During the 1950s and 1960s, Baylan was frequented by many poets, painters, writers, and actors, such as Atillâ İlhan, Behçet Necatigil, Haldun Taner, Cemal Süreya, and Orhan Kemal. In fact, nearly 40 writers who were referred to as the “Baylancılar” were part of the social-realist literary movement that became known as the “Baylancılar movement.”
